Theatre – Death and The Maiden

Coming to the glorious Ellen Terry Barn Theatre at Smallhythe Place, nr Tenderden on Friday 30th September and Saturday 1st October 2022.

The Barn Theatre: Built in the late 1600s, the thatched barn was later transformed into a theatre in 1929 by Ellen Terry’s daughter, Edith Craig, as a way to keep her mother’s legacy alive. We still put on a diverse programme of performances throughout the year, as well as open-air shows in the summer.

Death and the Maiden was written in 1990 by Chilean playwright Ariel Dorfman. Set in an unnamed country emerging from a dictatorship, the play explores the after effects of repression on peoples’ lives, mental health and relationships. Relentlessly paced and filled with lethal surprises, it is an inquest into the darker side of humanity–one in which everyone is implicated and justice itself comes to seem like a fragile, perhaps ambiguous invention.

A Triada theatre production, fresh from its debut in Brighton this summer where it received the status of ‘groundbreaking work’ by Fringe review:

Triada Theatre don’t so much break a fourth wall as pick it up, port it and enter your home with it intact.” Fringe Review 2022.

Death and the Maiden is approximately 85 minutes long with a 20 minute interval. The bar will be open before the show and during the interval and guests are welcome to bring picnics to enjoy on the grounds before the show!
