Wilde Without The Boy – RYE ARTS FESTIVAL

Wilde Without The Boy – RYE ARTS FESTIVAL

“I was a man who stood in symbolic relations with the art and culture of my age…I had genius, a distinguished name, brilliancy, intellectual daring…along with these things, I had things that were different…”

Wilde Without The Boy is Gareth Armstrong’s dramatisation of De Profundis, the passionate letter Oscar Wilde wrote to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, from his gaol cell towards the end of Wilde’s prison sentence for gross indecency. Gerard Logan gives a brilliant and revelatory performance as Wilde in a dramatisation of one of the greatest love letters in history.

In the second half of the evening, Gerard will perform Wilde’s haunting poem The Ballad of Reading Gaol which narrates the execution of a fellow prisoner. It is underpinned by Simon Slater’s beautiful and specially commissioned musical score.
